Dow's Hill Interpretation Centre sits at the summit of Dow's Hill, above English Harbour — part of Nelson's Dockyard National Park, Antigua's UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Centre is the flagship visitor attraction of the National Parks Authority, established in 1989 with a grant from the Canadian International Development Agency, and remains in continuous public use today.
FRagments Architecture was engaged directly by the National Parks Authority as Lead Architect for the restoration and interior redesign of the Centre's Gift Shop. The work spanned envelope restoration, contemporary interior architecture, and the integration of a retail function into the historic building — delivered inside an active heritage site during ongoing public operation.
UNESCO heritage work asks for restraint, not reverence. The historic envelope — its openings, materials, and proportions — was retained, repaired, and brought back to good condition. Where the building needed to do new work — house a contemporary retail function, accommodate visitors, meet current code — the interventions were treated as clearly contemporary, additive, and reversible.
Inside the Gift Shop, the architectural strategy is legible at a glance. The historic shell is restored and painted in calm tones. The contemporary moves — a wall of illuminated arched display niches with concealed cove lighting, the exposed ceiling structure retained and painted to read as graphic, ribbed contemporary millwork at the central counter — are deliberately modern gestures sitting inside the historic envelope. The two registers read together without either competing: heritage shell, contemporary interior architecture, each clearly the work of a different century.
The completion of the Gift Shop in 2024–2025 established FRagments Architecture as a practice operating at the level of UNESCO World Heritage Site work — engaged directly by the National Parks Authority, delivering heritage restoration and contemporary interior architecture inside an active heritage site. The work demonstrates the studio's range: the same hand can restore the official residence of the Governor-General and design contemporary retail interiors within a UNESCO heritage envelope.
The Dow's Hill work positions the practice for continued heritage and institutional commissions at the highest level of the Caribbean architectural conversation.
